Press Release

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Trees an exhibition of artworks by 14 artists exploring the concept of trees.  Artists Daniel Ballesteros, Susanna Carlisle + Bruce Hamilton, Johnny DeFeo, Mary Farmilant, Welly Fletcher, Lawrence Fodor, Munson Hunt,  Alex Katz, Antti Laitinen, Gregory Lomayesva, Wes Mills, Oliver Polzin, and J P 제피 use a diverse range of mediums including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video and installation.

Trees invites guests to consider their relationship with nature and interconnectivity with the living world through the art experience. Exhibition selections include a large site-specific installation of images from old growth forests printed on silk by Mary Farmilant. The tapestries are layered and installed floor to ceiling to form an immersive environment. Photographic portraits by Daniel Ballesteros offer a poignant exploration of the resilience of trees in urban environments.  A video performance by J P 제피 honors a large cottonwood tree that resides in Albuquerque, NM through song, adornment, and physical connection. Munson Hunt brings new life to wood by transforming old tree trunks into elegant organic sculptures.  Additional works by Susanna Carlisle + Bruce Hamilton, Johnny DeFeo, Lawrence Fodor,  Welly Fletcher,  Alex Katz, Antti Laitinen, Gregory Lomayesva, Wes Mills, and Oliver Polzin are also featured in Trees.

This exhibition is presented in partnership with the City of Albuquerque’s Let’s Plant ABQ campaign. Let’s Plant ABQ is giving away 100 trees to visitors during the artist reception on September 6th. Let’s Plant ABQ provides numerous ways to participate in the health of our urban environment by connecting community members to resources such as rebates planting, tree care information and tree donation opportunities as an effort to support future generations. Let’s Plant ABQ aims to plant a tree for every child in Albuquerque or 100,000 trees by 2030.
