Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present If Time Was a Place, a selection of oil paintings by Jenifer Kobylarz and sculptures by Matt Magee. Kobylarz’s paintings of interlocking lines create illusionary depth on flat wood panels. Magee’s sculptures are webs of abstract shapes cut from found laundry detergent bottles.
Jenifer Kobylarz creates mesmerizing abstract paintings that refer to the Op art movement of the 1960s. Her repetitious shapes ebb and flow across the panel surface; they are slightly disjointed yet balanced by a perfect combination of colors. Kobylarz has exhibited her work at Edward Thorp Gallery, Lennon Weinberg Gallery and DC Moore Gallery in New York, Galerie Elisabeth Michitsch in Vienna, and Eugene Binder Gallery in Marfa, TX. Her paintings have been reviewed by numerous publications including the New York Times, ArtForum, Art in America, and the New York Observer. Kobylarz lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
In his series Hangers, Matt Magee transforms discarded plastic into refined sculptures that are reminiscent of Alexander Calder’s mobiles and possess the vibrant colors of an Ellsworth Kelly painting. Magee repurposes Mexican detergent bottles gathered from laundromats and selected for their saturated colors. The organization of abstract shapes in Hangers reflects a visual language evocative of hieroglyphs. In April, Radius Books will publish a monograph of Magee’s work entitled Matt Magee: Works 2012–2018. He has received many awards including the 2017 Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award, the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation Residency Fellowship, and the 1991 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Magee currently lives and works in Phoenix, AZ.
