Biography and Information
Biography
Gregory Lomayesva (b. 1971) is a painter and sculptor known for his unique blend of cultural imagery with contemporary abstraction and pop art. Influenced by his heritage, Lomayesva draws from his mother’s expertise as a traditional Hispanic santera and author, who taught him carving, and his father’s background as a Hopi painter and jewelry designer. Additionally, he finds inspiration in contemporary American artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Jackson Pollock. His resulting artwork synthesizes these influences into something new and not bound by any single tradition.
Gregory Lomayesva is an artist, musician, and sound engineer. He has done architectural design and installations at the Inn of Loretto, Eldorado Hotel, Nativo Hotel, Talking Stick Resort, and at Taos Ski Valley Lodging. Lomayesva has shown widely at venues like Gebert Contemporary in Santa Fe, NM, J.Cacciola Gallery in New York, NY, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, the Albuquerque Museum in Albuquerque, NM and STAP Project in Florence, Italy. He’s also an electronic pop artist under the name Micah Sky. Lomayesva lives and works in Santa Fe, NM.
I try to make beautiful images by combining the cultures that have formed me. I don’t identify myself too much with either culture because I don’t want to be pigeon-hold. I think that doing art based on ethnicity limits the playing field, so I try to express myself as an artist whose playing field is the world. — Gregory Lomayesva
