Press Release
Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to introduce Threads, a group exhibition of works by eight artists using stitching as a means for aesthetic creation.
Byoung is a Korean artist living in California with an interest in logic and mathematic equations which are embroidered in her work. Andrea Bischoff is an Australian artist who stitches lyrical compositions into tissue paper. Seth Koen crochets minimal and organic cotton forms filled with lentils and is based in Oakland, CA. Chicago based Marci Rae McDade stitches organic patterns onto a variety of fabrics to create illusions of space. Mark Newport, an artist based in Mesa, AZ, embellishes comic book covers and football trading cards with thread and beads. Stephen Sollins takes found embroidered materials and removes the stitches and mathematically reconfigure the compositions based on the number of stitches removed. Lisa Solomon stitches and draws onto canvas and presents her work in embroidery hoops. Finally, Oriane Stender weaves and stitches celebrity icons using commodified objects such as a dollar bills.
Once considered craft, Threads celebrates how the process of sewing can now be found in the practices of contemporary artists all over the world.
