Surface Tension Projection

July 20, 2023

I am inspired to study the surge of textures caused by the intersectionality of a human being immersed and oscillating inside a body of water. While the pool symbolizes luxury and access, I see water as a mythic connective tissue between us all. Drawing from my Indian roots and cultural interest in ritual, my piece reflects a tapestry of issues that have shaped my narrative. As I witness diverse bodies and examine the metamorphosis, I see a circularity in this act of a swim. From the perspective of a first-generation immigrant, this piece stands for freedom; freedom from restriction of movement, expression, identity, and judgment. Drawing invisible lines of connection between our ages and stages of life, this work is about the human family and our generational and ancestral ties to one another.

This piece features swimmers identifying as binary and non-binary, star-crossed lovers and children, creating a cacophony of overlapping experiences. Counteracting the erasure of representation found in our history books, Surface Tension reminds us of this elemental joy and synchronicity that binds us all into one human constellation.
