Jay Kelly and Jonas Wood

Untitled
July 28 – September 9

Press Release

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Untitled, a selection of sculptures by New York based artist Jay Kelly and prints by multi-media artist Jonas Wood. Kelly creates minimal abstract sculptures out of metal, wood, and paper. Wood makes contemporary compositions of ordinary objects like vessels and potted plants.

Jay Kelly constructs handmade mixed-media objects with delicately welded metal, painted wood, and Japanese paper. Created around wiry lattices in grid or biomorphic shapes, these small-scale artifacts embrace a sense of lightheartedness. His aesthetic alludes to 20th century architecture and furniture. Kelly’s work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; British Museum, London; San Diego Museum of Art; Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, HI; Yale University Art Museum, New Haven, CT; Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, NJ; JP Morgan Chase, New York, NY; and Fidelity Investments, New York, NY.

Jonas Wood creates prints of domestic interiors, flowers, plants and studies of ceramic vases created by his wife, Shio Kusaka. His distinct style of overlapping textures and flattening three dimensional space is likened to David Hockney and Henri Matisse. Using various printing techniques including lithography, silkscreen and woodblock, he renders his subjects in vivid colors and patterns. In two of his works, he covers the outside of the vessels with intricate yet playful landscapes of dinosaurs. Born in Boston, MA, Wood currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Wood’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide including shows at the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Museum of Contemporary Art,  Los Angeles; Gagosian Gallery, London, Hong Kong and Beverly Hills; and The Rema Hort Mann Foundation, NY among others. Wood’s works are in the permanent collections of the Cleveland Clinic, OH; Saatchi Gallery, London; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Wake Forest University, NC. Born in Boston,  Wood currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
