Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present a selection of new paintings by emerging artist Jacob Goble. Goble creates figurative paintings with highly abstract qualities that challenge viewers’ assumptions of narrative.
Taking particularized subject matter, Goble engages in a representational play of objects, not unlike the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, made famous declaring, Ceci n’est pas une pipe. In place of the tight realism of Magritte are smoky images that reinforce the painted surface. Goble paints campfires, decoys, signs, and demolition derbies, but is just as interested in depicting objects in paint, as he is in painting the space around things: the silence, the stillness, the distance, that exists between things. Indeed his paintings are ultimately signals for something outside them.
