Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present entre las nubes (among the clouds), a series of colorful embroideries by hazel batrezchavez.
The work is inspired by their family’s dreams, stories of crossing natural and artificial borders, and personal iconography. They incorporate symbolism related to animals and plants in Nahua, Lenca, and Mayan cultures, with references to current and historical events.
batrezchavez is an artist and and founding member of the fronteristxs Collective and Granadina Co-op. Their work has been exhibited at El Paso Museum of Art, Santa Fe Art Institute, Southern Exposure (CA), SOMA (Mexico City), Radford Museum of Art (VA), Higher Art Gallery (MI), among others. batrezchavez currently lives and works as in Tiwa, Tewa, and Pueblo Territory.
