Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Þyngdarljóð—Gravity’s Poetry, a series of limited-edition photographs of Icelandic waterfalls by Eric Tillinghast. Each waterfall is displayed in a custom-built light box containing internal mechanics that generate light and sound to simulate surging water.
Last year Eric Tillinghast spent two months documenting the largest waterfalls in Iceland. These photographs capture a phenomenon that only occurs when water can fall far enough to reach terminal velocity. The air surrounding the water creates enough resistance to push it apart, which results in a visual display of undulating curtains of water. Tillinghast explores the sculptural aspects of this phenomenon. By using mechanical devices to re-animate the photographs mounted in light boxes, he creates an effect that resides somewhere between photography and video.
Tillinghast has been working with water as a sculptural material since 1994 in an ongoing series of sculptures, site-specific installations, and paintings and photographs in which it is the primary subject. His work can be found in the permanent collections of Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; John Michael Kohler Art Center in Wisconsin; Museum of Fine Art in Santa Fe; Portland State University; and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona, among others. Tillinghast lived in Santa Fe for many years and currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
