Biography and Information
Biography
Christina Renee Rodriguez finds inspiration from memory, culture, and identity in the series Mexican Radio. The artist’s visual language is formed by her own multicultural identity and experience. Rodriguez collages family photos with Mexican, American, and Indigenous symbols, and transfers them to handmade Amatl paper. This type of paper was a pre-Columbian material used for communication, records, and ritual before being banned by Spanish conquest [during the Triple Alliance in the fifteenth century. The artist draws on the history of Amatl paper as a metaphor for? her own heritage where cultural renewal emerges after centuries of colonization.
Christina Renee Rodriguez (b.1968) has exhibited widely across the United States, including recent exhibitions at Gallery 1516 in Omaha, Reuben Saunders Gallery in Wichita, and the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City. She was named a 2024 Photolucida Critical Mass Top 200 finalist and has received numerous accolades, including honors from the International Photography Awards and The Art of Photography Show. Rodriguez lives and works in Wichita, Kansas.
Often in the late 1970s my family would load up in our avocado green Oldsmobile, Toronado to visit family in San Antonio TX. As we drove closer to the Mexican border, my Dad would begin tuning the radio dial, hoping to pick up a Mexican radio station, a station unreachable in Kansas. For miles, there was only a fuzzy, layered interim mix of Aretha Franklin and Waylon Jennings with a sprinkling of distant static from Vicente Fernandez. As our gigantic Toronado motored down the road deep into south Texas, the Mexican radio became clear and Vicente’s confident voice vibrated through the speakers, “Y Volver Volver, Volvvveeeerrrrr!” Delighted, my Dad called back with his heartfelt grito! — Christina Renee Rodriguez
