On the occasion of Alex Katz’s 95th birthday Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Happy Birthday, Alex Katz, an exhibition of prints and paintings. This exhibition also celebrates Alex Katz‘s career-spanning retrospective which opens in October at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Alex Katz is known for distinctive bold lines and flat fields of color, a style that he has refined over the past seven decades. Throughout his career, he has worked expansively in the field of printmaking. The exhibition features new and vintage artworks in various mediums, including oil paintings, silkscreens, a woodblock print, an aquatint, and a pigment print. Highlights include a1968 silkscreen of a minimalist interior space and an oil painting from 2000 of a beach and harbor. Also included are limited edition prints of flowers, trees, and figures executed in the artist’s signature graphic style.
Alex Katz is an American figurative artist credited as a precursor of the Pop Art movement. Katz has upcoming solo exhibitions at Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Colby College Museum of Art, Maine; Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, Netherlands; Albertina, Vienna, Austria; and the Poetry Foundation, Chicago. He has exhibited his work widely and is in over a hundred public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institute, Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, and many more. The artist lives in New York and Maine.
