Press Release
Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Color Matter, a solo exhibition of optical abstract paintings by Chinese artist Xuan Chen. Through a combined exploration of cognitive response to visual illusion and a painter’s approach, Chen reflects the growing contemporary practice of seeking new areas where technology and aesthetics merge.
Using her own computer created 3D images, Chen illustrates what the left eye and the right eye are individually supposed to see. Each layer depicts this separation and is reunited by her paintbrush. Exposing the handmade quality of the paintings, Chen emphasizes the subliminal message of analog versus digital to produce complex visual space. Xuan Chen lives and works in Albuquerque, NM. This is her first solo exhibition at Richard Levy Gallery. Her paintings are included in Albuquerque’s Public Art Collection, and her work has received awards from the Contemporary Art Society of New Mexico, the University of New Mexico Art Museum, and the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women.
