Press Release
Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present 2020 Vision, a group exhibition of contemporary artists working with photography. The exhibition showcases an array of subject matter and diverse ways of working with this medium.
Highlights include gilded photographs by Daniel Ballesteros, in which buildings, concrete, and other manmade structures within the image are obscured by gold leaf leaving only the vegetation visible. By isolating trees at specific crime sites, Ballesteros attempts to spark conversations about gun violence and climate change. William Betts uses his photographs as source material to create large acrylic paintings comprising thousands of dots. Tricia Capello’s photograph of natural light illuminating the delicate stem of a house plant becomes a formal study of light and dark. Capello approaches image-making from a meditative place as Buddhist principles inform how she perceives the world. Jason DeMarte’s photographs combine the natural and artificial worlds. He builds tableaux by digitally compositing candy and icing into scenes with birds and flowers. Jocelyn Lee creates portraits that are reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch paintings. Manjari Sharma further investigates the relationship between figure and water. Human forms are abstracted by water in her new series Surface Tension. Informed by scientific inquiry and climate change Shoshannah White records artifacts from the natural world. The gallery is also showing works by Mary Ellen Bartley, Dylan Hausthor, and Sallie Scheufler for the first time.
2020 Vision presents a wide range of techniques being used within photography. From formal portraiture to gold-leafed landscapes to underwater photographs of glaciers, this exhibition embraces the possibilities of the medium.
