Stuart Arends • Stuart Arends: Work 1985-1996
Essay by Susan Harris
Stuart Arends was born in Waterloo, Iowa in 1950. Arends’s work reflects his concern with the physicality of the materials he uses to create his images. In these abstractions, often in the format of boxes, the artist’s marks become the subject matter. Furthermore, Arend’s acute understanding of formalism and its underlying issues is delicately intertwined in his oeuvre. The artist once said, “I look on the paint I use like blood, the wax like flesh, the wood and steel like bone.”
Although Arends lives in Willard, New Mexico, his presence is international. Works by Arends can be found in permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Berlingieri Collection, Italy; Kramarsky Collection, New York; Museo Cantonale d’Arte, Lugano, Switzerland; Palazzo delle Albere, Italy; and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
