Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Magician’s Table, a three-person exhibition of sculptures by Jay Kelly, photograms by Jenna Kuiper, and paintings by Matt Magee. Intuitive practice is the thread that ties these artists and varied mediums together.

Jay Kelly constructs mixed-media sculptures from delicately welded metal, painted wood, and rice paper. Built around wiry lattices or biomorphic shapes, these small-scale contemporary sculptures recall ancient artifacts and embrace a sense of timelessness. Kelly’s work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; British Museum, London; San Diego Museum of Art; Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, HI; Yale University Art Museum, New Haven, CT; and Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, NJ, among others.

Bringing the vocabulary of drawing to the photography darkroom, Jenna Kuiper composes unique large-scale photograms using cut-up shapes, complex burning and dodging techniques, and fiber-based matte silver-gelatin paper. This camera-less process harkens back to the beginnings of photographic history. Based on conjecture rather than sight, Kuiper instinctively arranges her compositions in the dark with unforeseen results. Stones, daggers, ceremonial vessels, and geometric forms come together in images that embody stillness and movement, representation and abstraction, and elements of the unknown. Kuiper developed this series at Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco, CA. She lives and works in Albuquerque, NM.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Matt Magee has experimented widely with abstract and conceptual art. Magee finds inspiration in contemporary scientific, ecological, and technological advancements as well as early abstractionists. Despite the crisp regularity of his work, his brushstrokes are visible and engaging, and his formal compositions are expressive. Magee has been awarded the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation resident fellowship and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.
