Jonnie Winona Ross

Dry Wash Seeps
October 9 – November 3

Press Release

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased present Dry Wash Seeps, an exhibition of new paintings by Johnnie Winona Ross.

Inspired by the spirit of prehistoric images, Ross presents Dry Wash Seeps, as a continuation of a non verbal dialogue that began over 6000 years ago and that spans millenniums into the present. Rock art and canyons of Cedar Mesa (Anasazi and the Barrier Canyon cultures) in the four corners area are the inspiration for this series. In the tradition of the “New York School”, the artist begins with a specific pattern, direction, and intention, but rapidly transforms to a process that is purely intuitive and concerned only with resonance.

In 1999, Ross resigned from his position as an educator in Maine to dedicate to his artistic practice.  He relocated to northern New Mexico where he currently lives and works. Ross is a recent grant recipient for the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation.
