Hiroshi Sugimoto

Time Exposed
January 31 – March 8

Press Release

Richard Levy Gallery is pleased to present Time Exposed, an exhibition of selected photographs by Hiroshi Sugimoto. Influenced by minimalism and conceptualism, Hiroshi Sugimoto creates images that hold spiritual value. Inspired by early 19th century photography and Renaissance paintings, the artist achieves an exquisite range of tones in a body of work that reflects the artist’s love of detail, technical ability, and a fascination with the paradox of time. Hiroshi Sugimoto utilizes a large format camera to investigate the notion of timelessness by recording the seascape, a surface that remains the least changed thus revealing a time that exists beyond our own. The series was created in 1991 as an exterior installation commissioned by Benesse House Museum in Naoshima, Japan. The works are ephemeral and change over time from exposure to sun light and other natural elements.

Curated by Richard Levy Gallery, Time Exposed consists of nine tri-toned offset lithographs, published by Kyoto Shoin International Co., Ltd.. Printed by Mitsumura Printing Company Ltd. (Tokyo), the portfolio is comprises 50 black and white seascapes that were captured all over the world. Each print is embossed with a letterpress description of the location and year of the image.
