In recent years, German photography has become a major force in contemporary art. This dominance is due in part to the distinct and cohesive aesthetic sensibilities formed within Germany’s art academies.

The German photographic tradition of scientific objectivity and the powerful influence of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s preoccupation with architecture and seriality have marked many of the photographs to be exhibited in this show. As students of the Bechers in Düsseldorf, Ruff and Höfer provide a direct link to this tradition. They in turn have paved the way for successive generations of photographers including Oliver Boberg, Thomas Demand, and Martin Denker to reassess the subjects and formal approaches of their predecessors.
